WHERE IS THE LOFT GALLERY?

The Loft Gallery is situated behind the Fortescue Inn, and above a popular shoe shop, on a delightful footpath called Victoria Quay.

WHAT IS THE LOFT GALLERY?

The Loft Gallery is the home of Salcombe Art Club.

Every year since 1960, the Summer Exhibition opens at Easter and continues until the end of September. In the winter months, the Loft Gallery reverts to being a working studio with a full programme of workshops and classes for its members.

WHO CAN JOIN SALCOMBE ART CLUB?

Salcombe Art Club comprises a mix of artists: some professional artists such as those who teach our classes but also many amateurs and some very new to drawing/painting. Everyone is welcome!

Step 1 is to enroll as a Lay Member. That’s the first rung of the ladder! Then Salcombe Art club has three categories of membership.

Lay members (for a subscription of £12 per annum) may take part in workshops, courses and social activities and generally assist in supporting the club. Lay members may not exhibit, nor vote at the AGM.
Associate members (for a subscription of £17 per annum) may take part in most club activities including exhibiting in the Little Studio section (but not the main gallery) of the Annual Summer Exhibition.
Full members (for a subscription of £27 per annum) may take part in all club activities and exhibit their works in the Annual Summer Exhibition.

Essentially, exhibiting is limited to the associate and full members of Salcombe Art Club. Full members are invited to display up to five of their works in the Summer Exhibition.

In the Little Studio also, our teachers exhibit material of works produced by the various class groups; this inspires other club members to enrol for classes during the winter months.

FEATURED IMAGE: Salcombe Dawn II

The original of Salcombe Dawn II is on display at the Loft Gallery as part of Salcombe Art Club Main Exhibition. It’s an oil painting, 16 inches x 20 inches, priced at £450.

A fine art greetings card of Salcombe Dawn I – a similar but smaller oil painting that was sold in 2015 – is available at a fraction of that cost, within walking distance of the Loft Studio. Try Salcombe Information Centre or Bonningtons, the newsagents.

SOLD! Baltic Exchange III Standing By at Island Terrace

Baltic Exchange III Standing By at Island Terrace – the featured image above – was one of several paintings I produced in 2010 as part of my one-man exhibition in support of the Salcombe Life Boat. Since then, it’s appeared in several exhibitions and, at last – on display at Avon Mill – it has sold, and is now on its way to Australia.

Six years ago, I was living in a flat at Great Gates – above what was then the Marine Hotel and is now The Harbour Hotel – and, each time I heard the lifeboat go by, I’d rush out onto my balcony and take photos. So, I had plenty of resource material.

This painting of Baltic Exchange II was donated to the Salcombe RNLI and raffled at an event held in The Fortescue Inn.

Salcombe Heroes was bought by the mother of one of our lifeboat crew.

Return to Base is one of the few original painting not for sale. It hangs in my own gallery at home. This is because I donated the image to the Salcombe Lifeboat and, by donation, you can obtain it as a fine art greetings card in the Salcombe RNLI shop.

The original of Baltic Exchange III was sold to a Japanese visitor to Salcombe’s Summer Exhibition in 2010.

I’ve now moved house and rarely see the lifeboat unless I am taking in the view from the terrace of Salcombe Yacht Club, or by leaning out of the window of Salcombe Art Club. It’s on my list of images to revisit soon.

Baltic Exchange III is also available as a fine art greetings card. As one of my best sellers, it’s on sale just about everywhere: Salcombe Yacht Club, Salcombe Information Centre, Bonningtons (the Salcombe newsagents) and at Malborough Post Office.

SHAF Trail: 15-23 October

SHAF brochure The SHAF Trail is an annual event organised by the South Hams Art Forum – and it starts one month from today.

Local artists open their homes, allowing visitors to see for themselves how we work, and to talk one-on-one with the artists.

Brochures giving a complete list of all the artists taking part in the SHAF Trail are available at a number of places: Salcombe Information Centre, Bonningtons the newsagents, Spar (Loring Road), Salcombe Yacht Club, …

WHEN CAN YOU VISIT BEACON HOUSE GALLERY?

Beacon House Gallery will be open for visitors as follows:

Where is Beacon house gallery?

Beacon House Gallery is within my home – the hall, stairs and landing, no less. It’s not normally open to the public, except by prior arrangement. However, for the SHAF Trail, we welcome visitors during ‘opening hours’ as listed above. You don’t need to book ahead. Just turn up and you will be made very welcome.

As you approach Salcombe, there will be yellow posters with arrows pointing the way to Beacon House.

You could park in the park’n’walk at the top of Bonfire Hill and walk down. There might be parking spaces in Bonfire Hill alongside the allotments, or you could park on our private drive at the end of the shared drive. (Please do not park on the shared drive.)

We do not currently have access for disabled visitors – but we are having alterations made to the house over this winter so for next year’s SHAF Trail we will be able to welcome wheelchair users.

SHAF (South Hams Arts Forum) Trail 15-23 October

The SHAF Trail is the final event in my artist’s calendar, and we like to start it with a Preview Evening. On show will be my latest creations:

Today, I have travelled to Plymouth to have this latest crop of paintings photographed / digitally scanned ahead of the SHAF Trail – and the race now is to varnish, mount, and frame these in time.

Where do I have my paintings photographed?

I recommend Bretonside Copy. They have photographed more than 100 of my original paintings.

I deliver my paintings first thing, then spend time in Plymouth shopping, and return later to check the colour matching. The high-quality images are supplied electronically, so we can then produce fine art greetings card and prints as required.

Who do I go to for mounts and framing?

I recommend Jeremy Smith at Creek Framing. Jeremy will be very busy in the run-up to SHAF and, fingers crossed, he’ll be able to get mine done in time.

The original of South Pool Sunrise is on display at the Loft Gallery as part of Salcombe Art Club Main Exhibition. It shows the Salcombe estuary up to South Pool from my studio at Beacon House Gallery. It’s amazing, with such a glorious view, that I find time to paint!

SOLD! The Swan Inn at Noss Mayo

Knowing that a new gallery would soon be opening in the Revelstoke Room next to the Village Hall in Noss Mayo, I decided – a year ago – to focus my attention on capturing scenes local to Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo.

Although I now live in Salcombe, and most of my paintings features scenes close to my home, Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo are also close to my heart.

Decades ago, when my children were young, we would rent Rose Cottage, next to The Dolphin. When the tide was in, we’d visit the Swan Inn by boat. If the tide was out, we’d cross the causeway on foot. We also often ate at The Ship and enjoyed the views across to the Swan Inn. I have very many happy memories of those times.

Choosing which scenes to paint was therefore easy – and so it was that Low Tide at Newton Ferrers, Bridge End, Newton Creek and The Swan Inn at Noss Mayo were added to my portfolio of paintings.

All three images were on display in that new gallery – The Gallery Project – until recently, and this week, with all three of them back in my own gallery at home, the original of The Swan Inn at Noss Mayo has been sold – to someone whose house appears in the image.

The Gallery Project in Noss Mayo stocks a selection of my cards. It’s open Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays 11am-5pm from Easter until the end of September and from mid-November until 24 December.

There is also a Gallery Project at Avon Mill, and they have a selection of cards for sale (photo of me with all 12 designs).

In Salcombe, my cards are available within walking distance of the Loft Gallery: at Bonningtons the newsagents, and at the Salcombe Information Centre.

Reflections at Batson: on display in the Michael Hill Class Exhibition at the Loft Gallery

Reflections at Batson is one of four of my paintings currently on display in the Michael Hill Class Exhibition in the Little Studio at the Loft Gallery, Salcombe.

This exhibition is a collection of artwork by the students of Michael Hill’s watercolour/acrylic classes, demonstrating not only our talents but also his expertise as a teacher.

I have today signed up for Michael’s next term of classes: 8 all-day sessions Tuesdays from Sept 27 – Nov 22 except October 25 (half term), costing in total £105. That’s only £13.125 a day, and less than £3 an hour for the most wonderful tuition. What a bargain!

According to Salcombe Art Club’s publicity for this course: Michael is an experienced and highly accomplished painter in both acrylic and watercolour. He will demonstrate both mediums in all his classes, taking in drawing, painting techniques and composition. A friendly and informal class welcoming beginners and more experienced painters.

I couldn’t agree more!

Reflections at Batson

Back to my paintings on show in Michael’s Class Exhibition … This is an extract from a longer posting all about Batson.

At the top of Batson Creek, a collection of thatched cottages delight the eye. They sit around a triangle of grass complete with its old-fashioned telephone box. (At least, the phone box was there, the last time I visited!) The reflections of these cottages in the water only serve to enhance the tranquility of the scene, and this inspired me to paint Reflections at Batson.

Salcombe Lifeboats Art Fair: 16-18 August at Holy Trinity Church, Salcombe

Salcombe Lifeboats Art Fair starts tomorrow!

As a sailor, I support the RNLI and, in particular, the lifeboats in Salcombe and Hope Cove. Without the brave crews who man the lifeboats, many a sailor would be lost. Their equipment and training is expensive, so I am delighted to have been invited by the Friends of Salcombe Lifeboat to support this charitable event.
