Spring term art classes at Salcombe Art Club

2017 exhibition schedule Yes, it’s time to start thinking about signing up for spring term art classes at Salcombe Art Club.

Although I paint a lot and some would say I’m quite good at it, there’s always something new to learn … and these classes are brilliantly tutored and great fun to attend.

Which classes have I signed up for?

I have signed up for five workshops/classes- which will keep me busy on Tuesdays and Fridays – and a couple of weekends – ahead of the start of the Main Exhibition on Friday 30 March 2018.

Painting in Acrylics or Watercolour with Michael Hill: Tues 9 Jan – 6 Mar (except 13 Feb = half term) 10am – 3.30pm
Oil Painting with Ian Carr: Fri 12 Jan – 16 Mar 10am – 3.30pm
Travelling Light Oil Painting with Ian Carr: Sat & Sun 3/4 Feb 10.30am – 4pm
Untutored Life Drawing: Tues 13 Feb, 13 March, 20 March 10am – 1pm
Portrait Workshop with Jenny Johnson: Sat 24 Feb 10am– 4pm

Are there other classes?

Yes! Classes are arranged each term – Autumn and Spring. Apart from the ones I’ve chosen there are several others …

Plus, there are ‘Studio Painting Days’ which provide an opportunity to spend a day painting in the company of like-minded artists and ‘Untutored printmaking’ for experienced printmakers.

To attend, you need to be a member of Salcombe Art Club.

How do you become a member?

There are three categories of membership.

Lay members may take part in workshops, courses and social activities and generally assist in supporting the club but may not exhibit.
Associate members may take part in most club activities including exhibiting in the Little Studio section (but not the main gallery) of the Annual Summer Exhibition. Associate members also have voting rights at the annual AGM.
Full members may take part in all club activities and exhibit their works in the Annual Summer Exhibition when they are required to carry out their share of stewarding duties. Full members also have voting rights at the annual AGM.

The first step is to enrol as a lay member; it only costs £12 per annum. After that, there is an annual selection process to become an associate member or a full member. For full details, check the How to Join page on the SAC website.

Exhibition time: At the Redfern centre – 29 June – 27 July

Members of Salcombe Art Club support the Friends of the Redfern by providing a display of artwork for sale in the waiting area.

If you purchase one, a proportion of the sale is donated to this worthwhile local charity.

EXHIBITION OF WORKS AT THE REDFERN CENTRE: THURSDAY 29 June – 27 July 2017

This is my seventh exhibition at the Redfern Centre. I have on display five paintings: four acrylics and one watercolour (in the centre).

They are (clockwise from top left): Scoble Point, Reflections at Batson, Watchhouse to Ferry Steps, Evening Row and At Ditch End (the featured image above).

All these original paintings are competitively priced at £200 for the larger ones (which are all behind glass) and £150 for the two smaller paintings.

AFFORDABLE ART

For about 1% of the sales price of an original painting, you could invest in a fine art greetings card.

Send it to a friend or frame it for yourself. Whistlefish sell frames that fit … about £10 each.

Of the paintings in this exhibition, only Watchhouse to Ferry Steps and Reflections at Batson is available as a fine art greetings card. They are stocked at Malborough Post Office along with the entire range of 59 cards.

CONTEMPORARY PASSIONS PREVIEW: GILLY COTTER

Gilly Cotter and I are both showing at the annual Contemporary Passions exhibition, an opportunity for members of SHAF (South Hams Art Forum) to stage a major summer show of new works in a wide range of mediums and styles.

The exhibition provides a snapshot of the artists’ current work, interests and creative passions.

The featured image above is one of several pieces that Gilly will have on show. It’s called ‘Tidal Road Egret’ and is a Limited Edition Etching 20 x 25 cm.

Gilly is a member of the South Hams Arts Forum, the Pressgang Printers, Salcombe Art Club, and the West Country Potters Association.

Gilly says: I like to represent the world around me by interpreting the shapes, the spaces in between, and the textures. My inspiration comes from the natural world, including wildlife and its relationship with the natural environment. I work in various media including; print-making, oils, and ceramics.

The Contemporary Passions exhibition will be at Harbour House, The Promenade, Kingsbridge, Devon, TQ7 1JD.

It’s open daily 10 am – 5 pm (closing at 4 pm on the last day): Tuesday 6 June until Sunday 18 June 2017

WANT TO MEET THE ARTISTS?

There will be an opportunity to meet all the artists on Tuesday 6 June, 6-8 pm.

You might also call in when Gilly or I are stewarding.

Gilly will be stewarding all day on Wednesday 7 June and in the afternoon on Saturday 17 June. I will be stewarding all day on Saturday 10 June and on the morning of Saturday 17 June.

Salcombe Art Club Summer exhibition
Thursday 13 April – Saturday 30 September 2017

2017 exhibition schedule As a member of Salcombe Art Club, I’ve exhibited in the club’s Summer Exhibition for many years now.

I usually submit 5 paintings, and the rule is that none of these original works of art can have been hung in the Loft Gallery in the previous three years. This encourages artists to keep on painting!

Handing in day is 1 April – five weeks away and I am hard at work.

The Loft Studio is open 7 days a week from 11am until 5pm. Admission is free.

Consuming Passions Exhibition
Tuesday 6 June – Sunday 18 June 2017

This is a new one for me. It’s organised by SHAF (South Hams Arts Forum). I’ve been a member of that organisation for several years and have enjoyed the events they organise for local artists: talks and social events.

This will be my first joint venture with them, in an exhibition!

It’s at Harbour House. Kingsbridge – a wonderful gallery space – and I’ll be exhibiting probably 7 paintings there.

Doors will be open from 10am – 5pm and admission is free.

One-man exhibition in the Redfern Health Centre
Thursday 29 June – Thursday 27 July 2017

Full members of Salcombe Art Club are asked to display their work for one month – so that those visiting the Redfern have something to admire while waiting to see the doctor.

It’s an honour to be on the team again and to know that my paintings may provide some cheer to those having health issues.

On one occasion, a gentleman recognised Burgh Island in one of my paintings as the venue for his marriage many years previous. He purchased it as a surprise for his wife. How romantic!

The Redfern benefits from all sales; – a percentage of the purchase price is donated to their funds.

One-man exhibition in the Little Studio in the Loft Gallery
Sunday 13 August – Saturday 26 August 2017

2017 exhibition schedule Salcombe Art Club invite members, including associate members, to take one or two weeks in the Little Studio, to display as many of their paintings as they can hang in the space.

More recent paintings that didn’t sell last year can be hung so they usually get another airing.

I’ll be stewarding all day both Sundays, so that’s a good time to pop in and chat, if you want to ‘meet the artist’.

SHAF Arts Trail
Saturday 14 October – Sunday 29 October

The South Hams Art Forum (SHAF) usually have a one-week Arts Trail. This year, it’s extended to two weeks so that those on holiday in the area might have more opportunity to attend during the school’s half-term holiday.

Viewings at Beacon House Gallery are usually by appointment but, for the period of the SHAF Arts Trail, we will welcome visitors 11am-3pm Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and 10am-5pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. (Closed on a Tuesday)

I usually hold a private preview evening ahead of the start of the season, but the gallery is being refurbished and works will not be completed before Easter.

Instead, there will be an event to celebrate the re-opening of Beacon House Gallery – whenever that happens!

News: Ian Carr and Jon Woolfenden

It’s holiday time and yet Ian Carr, one of my tutors at Salcombe Art Club, is in the process of refurbishing his studio!

Ian’s Sail Loft in Shadycombe Road, at the bottom of Coronation Road, is being transformed to create the Contemporary Art Studios.

Ian has teamed up with Jon Woolfenden, formerly of Hope Cove Gallery in Island Street, in this exciting new venture.

When will the new Contemporary Art Studios be open?

The new Contemporary Art Studios – to include a downstairs gallery – is due to open at Easter 2017.

Ian studied at Chester School of Art, Leeds College of Art, and Manchester University.

He taught art in UK and Zambia, and has been a gallery director and copywriter.

Founder of the Bunker Project, Ian has exhibited widely throughout the UK.

Ian is a very experienced Salcombe-based artist who loves teaching and sharing his enthusiasm.

Oil paint is a forgiving medium and ideal for anyone who has limited experience of paint; it builds confidence and invites experimentation.

Ian’s courses – one full day or one evening – are suitable for the experienced, not so experienced and the absolute beginner.

STEWARDING TODAY: 11am – 2pm Tuesday 20 September

Today, Tuesday 20 September, I’m stewarding at the Loft Gallery from 11am until 2pm.

WHERE IS THE LOFT GALLERY?

The Loft Gallery is situated behind the Fortescue Inn, and above a popular shoe shop, on a delightful footpath called Victoria Quay.

WHAT IS THE LOFT GALLERY?

The Loft Gallery is the home of Salcombe Art Club.

Every year since 1960, the Summer Exhibition opens at Easter and continues until the end of September. In the winter months, the Loft Gallery reverts to being a working studio with a full programme of workshops and classes for its members.

WHO CAN JOIN SALCOMBE ART CLUB?

Salcombe Art Club comprises a mix of artists: some professional artists such as those who teach our classes but also many amateurs and some very new to drawing/painting. Everyone is welcome!

Step 1 is to enroll as a Lay Member. That’s the first rung of the ladder! Then Salcombe Art club has three categories of membership.

Lay members (for a subscription of £12 per annum) may take part in workshops, courses and social activities and generally assist in supporting the club. Lay members may not exhibit, nor vote at the AGM.
Associate members (for a subscription of £17 per annum) may take part in most club activities including exhibiting in the Little Studio section (but not the main gallery) of the Annual Summer Exhibition.
Full members (for a subscription of £27 per annum) may take part in all club activities and exhibit their works in the Annual Summer Exhibition.

WHO EXHIBITS AT THE LOFT GALLERY?

Essentially, exhibiting is limited to the associate and full members of Salcombe Art Club. Full members are invited to display up to five of their works in the Summer Exhibition.

Full – and associate – members may also book a week or more in the Little Studio.

In the Little Studio also, our teachers exhibit material of works produced by the various class groups; this inspires other club members to enrol for classes during the winter months.

FEATURED IMAGE: Salcombe Dawn II

The original of Salcombe Dawn II is on display at the Loft Gallery as part of Salcombe Art Club Main Exhibition. It’s an oil painting, 16 inches x 20 inches, priced at £450.

A fine art greetings card of Salcombe Dawn I – a similar but smaller oil painting that was sold in 2015 – is available at a fraction of that cost, within walking distance of the Loft Studio. Try Salcombe Information Centre or Bonningtons, the newsagents.

SOLD! Baltic Exchange III Standing By at Island Terrace

Baltic Exchange III Standing By at Island Terrace – the featured image above – was one of several paintings I produced in 2010 as part of my one-man exhibition in support of the Salcombe Life Boat. Since then, it’s appeared in several exhibitions and, at last – on display at Avon Mill – it has sold, and is now on its way to Australia.

Six years ago, I was living in a flat at Great Gates – above what was then the Marine Hotel and is now The Harbour Hotel – and, each time I heard the lifeboat go by, I’d rush out onto my balcony and take photos. So, I had plenty of resource material.

This painting of Baltic Exchange II was donated to the Salcombe RNLI and raffled at an event held in The Fortescue Inn.

Salcombe Heroes was bought by the mother of one of our lifeboat crew.

Return to Base is one of the few original painting not for sale. It hangs in my own gallery at home. This is because I donated the image to the Salcombe Lifeboat and, by donation, you can obtain it as a fine art greetings card in the Salcombe RNLI shop.

The original of Baltic Exchange III was sold to a Japanese visitor to Salcombe’s Summer Exhibition in 2010.

I’ve now moved house and rarely see the lifeboat unless I am taking in the view from the terrace of Salcombe Yacht Club, or by leaning out of the window of Salcombe Art Club. It’s on my list of images to revisit soon.
