Exhibition time at the Redfern Centre: 31 May – 28 June

Members of Salcombe Art Club support the Friends of the Redfern by providing a display of artwork for sale in the waiting area.

If you purchase one, a proportion of the sale is donated to this worthwhile local charity.

This is my eighth exhibition at the Redfern Centre and I have chosen these five paintings to exhibit.

Provident

Provident is a retired Brixham trawler and has been a much-loved training ship for many generations of novice sailor.

Church of St Peter, Buckland-tout-saint

This pretty church stands high on the hill and commands excellent views across surrounding countryside. Church of St Peter is a rare painting in that there are no sailing craft and no sea to be seen. And, there’s a bit of multimedia going on too.

North Hallsands

North Hallsands has some contemporary houses with spectacular views facing east towards Dartmouth. Its beach changes dramatically every winter.

Dawn at New Bridge

The bridge at Bowcombe offers an enchanting mooring for boats of all kinds. In Dawn at New Bridge, an early morning pink mist signals a fine day.

One-man exhibition 13-26 August in the Little Studio at the Loft Gallery, Salcombe

My one-man exhibition in the Little Studio at the Loft Gallery, Salcombe continues until Saturday 26 August.

I’ve space to show a wide range of my art in this one-man exhibition: watercolours, acrylics and oils. Fifteen paintings in all.

WHERE IS THE LOFT GALLERY?

The Loft Gallery is situated behind the Fortescue Inn, and above a popular shoe shop, on a delightful footpath called Victoria Quay, which overlooks one of the best views in the UK including the mooring berth of the RNLI lifeboat Baltic Exchange III.

AFFORDABLE ART

Out of 135 completed paintings to date, 59 of these are available as fine art greetings cards.

My cards are stocked at Bonningtons (the newsagents) and Salcombe Information Centre (both a short walk from the Loft Studio). Further afield, my cards are stocked by Malborough Post Office – they offer the entire range – The Gallery Project at Avon Mill and at Noss Mayo, and in Bloomers, the florist in Kingsbridge.

Just think: for less than 1% of the sales price of an original painting, you can invest in a fine art greetings card. Send it to a friend or frame it for yourself.

It’s sale time! For the month of November: £50 off any painting – that’s a third off those currently priced at £150.

Why have a sale?

Work is due to start soon to provide wheelchair access to Beacon House, so all my artwork will be taken down and packaged for the duration of the works.

When are we re-opening?

We hope the refurbishment will be complete in time for re-opening at Easter 2017.

Exhibition: Sunday 24 July – Saturday 6 August

Right now, the Loft Gallery is home to the Salcombe Art Club Summer Exhibition.

What happens when the Summer Exhibition ends?

When this annual exhibition ends, late in September, the unsold paintings are wrapped and removed by the artists, and the display boards are stored in the roof space. The trestle tables and easels are retrieved, and the Loft Gallery reverts to its winter role: a busy working space for the members of Salcombe Art Club.

A packed programme of art classes commences for all categories of member: lay, associate and full. These tutored classes – in drawing and painting (watercolour, acrylic and oil) – continue through the winter months until next Easter when the next Summer Exhibition opens.

Then, by way of a reward and in recognition of their hard work, the masterpieces of the artists who attended the various classes are displayed in the Little Studio.

Ian Carr’s oil class exhibition: Sunday 24 July until Saturday 24 August

Starting Sunday 24 July – for a fortnight – it’s the turn of Ian Carr’s oil class to show their work. I’ll have four paintings on display, as well as those already on display in the main exhibition.

Sunlight Across the Bar (featured above) is one of the few paintings that I’ve produced using a box canvas, 16 by 16 inches. This style of presentation is considered to be more modern than the traditional ‘framed, and often behind glass’ which predominates the Loft Gallery. The other three paintings are all traditionally framed and will be familiar to my blog readers.

Dappled Light III was on display in my one-man exhibition earlier this year.

Harvest Reaper II was also on display in my one-man exhibition and was featured in a blog entry focusing on the South Sands Ferry.

The Burgh Island Hotel featured in a Sketchbook Note on 11 July.The sales price for these four oil paintings ranges from £350 to £400.

The South Sands Ferry: The Harvest Reaper

To travel in a boat is a must for every visitor to Salcombe, especially the very young, and what better way to travel but on the Harvest Reaper?

The Fisher Price colours of yellow and blue make the South Sands Ferry look as if it’s popped out of a child’s toy box.

The journey from Salcombe to South Sands on the Harvest Reaper takes only 15 minutes, and then it’s the turn of the tractor to ferry the passengers ashore.

On the return journey, the prospect of driving back into the sea to await the incoming ferry, can worry some youngsters. However, any apprehension is easily forgotten with the promise of an ice cream at the end of the journey. Salcombe ice-cream is the finest!

The views each way are spectacular, along the beaches of the ria and out to sea. On a Saturday afternoon, the passengers can also take a close look at the dinghy sailors racing past.

I have painted the Harvest Reaper many times. The original of Harvest Reaper Beyond Fort Charles was sold when on exhibition at the Redfern Centre, but it’s still available as a fine art greetings card.

One-man show in the Little Studio

My one-man show in the Little Studio, at the Loft Gallery Salcombe, starts next Sunday 29 May and runs until Saturday 4 June.

I am displaying a dozen paintings: four each of my watercolours, my acrylics and my oil paintings.

My oil paintings on display will be Dappled Light III, Harvest Reaper II, Harvest Reaper III, and Sunlight Across the Bar.

The watercolours are: Ebb Tide at Batson Creek, Hope Cove Fishing Gear, Low Tide at East Portlemouth, and Reflections at Batson.

And the acrylic paintings are Dawn at South Pool Creek, Paddling at Burgh Island, Shifting Sands at Burgh Island I, and The Church at St Peter, Buckland Tout Saints.

Can’t afford to buy my paintings!

Nearly all of the images on sale in my one-man exhibition are also available as fine art greetings cards. Only a short distance from the Loft Gallery, you have the choice of buying these ‘man cards’ at Bonningtons, the newsagents, or at Salcombe Information Centre.
