It seems like only yesterday when the Salcombe Art Club Summer Exhibition opened. Now, we have only a few days to go before the gallery is transformed back into a classroom for the winter months.

SHAF Arts Trail: 13-28 October

As soon as the Salcombe Art Club Summer Exhibition has been taken down, I’ll be focusing on getting ready for the SHAF (South Hams Art Forum) Arts Trail. My home, gallery and studio will be open to the public for two weeks 13-28 October.

I am delighted that, this year, Michael Hill will be exhibiting with me at Beacon House Gallery.

OPEN! Salcombe Art Club Summer Exhibition 2018

Last Thursday, I attended the Salcombe Art Club Summer Exhibition Preview evening, at which cheques were distributed to two local worthy causes.

Our chairlady, Naomi Ainsley, and our esteemed Mayor, Michael Fice, made the presentations.

There are lots more photos on the Salcombe Art club’s page on Facebook and I’m sure there will be a report in the local Gazette in due course.

The tourists are now here for the Easter and we hope many of them will visit the Loft Gallery to see the wonderful display of work by local artists.

As members of the Salcombe Art Club, we are invited to display our creations. If sold, 15% of the price goes the to Salcombe Art club.

This ‘income’ pays for the running costs, but also funds our charitable gifts to local causes.

Which brings me back to the beginning of this post. This year’s beneficiaries were Erme Valley Riding for the Disabled and Kingsbridge Food Bank.

Salcombe Art Club Exhibition Preview: Longstone

Longstone is one of a crop of six new paintings destined for the Salcombe Art Club Summer Exhibition.

Right now, they are with the framer so they are not available to view just yet. However, if you want to purchase ahead of the Exhibition, and save 10% on the price (they range from £500 to £750), contact me to arrange a private viewing ahead of handing day on 24 March.

This image is taken from Bantham, looking towards Hope Cove. High on the cliff, you can just about make out the Cottage Hotel, currently under major redevelopment and refurbishment.

This view, taken from the beach (and one of the hotel’s own photos) shows it in more detail.

The Cottage Hotel is one of my favourite destinations. Whether it’s for Sunday lunch – like yesterday – or for a romantic getaway where Anne and I can relax and enjoy the wonderful sunsets – we are regular visitors.

We love the old-fashioned family atmosphere where customer service is the top priority. And, of course, the dessert trolley.

Back to my painting! Again, I am using oil paints.

In the middle distance, Longstone, this magnificent rock does look as if it’s braced against the roaring sea.

And, notice a streak of orange: the Hope Cove Rib at full tilt on a mission of mercy in those foul conditions.

I am keen to support local charities and good causes generally. To this end, there is a fine art greetings card which supports the Hope Cove Lifeboat.

Watch out for these and buy them!

They are on sale at the Cottage Hotel, and also at events organsied by the charity.

2018 EXHIBITION SCHEDULE

It’s that time of year – firming up the 2018 exhibition schedule. My diary is already looking full! Please put these dates in yours.

Open 7 days a week from 11am until 5pm. Admission is free.

2017 exhibition schedule As a member of Salcombe Art Club, I’ve exhibited in the club’s Summer Exhibition for many years now.

I usually submit 5 paintings, and the rule is that none of these original works of art can have been hung in the Loft Gallery in the previous three years. This encourages artists to keep on painting!

Handing in day is 24 March – less than five weeks away and my paintings are currently with the framer.

During the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing previews of these paintings. If you are keen to purchase any of this latest crop, and want to buy ahead of the exhibition, you can save 10% on the purchase price …

ONE-MAN EXHIBITION IN THE REDFERN HEALTH CENTRE
THURSDAY 28 JUNE – THURSDAY 26 JULY 2018

Full members of Salcombe Art Club are asked to display their work for one month – so that those visiting the Redfern have something to admire while waiting to see the doctor. On one occasion, a gentleman recognised Burgh Island in one of my paintings as the venue for his marriage many years previous. He purchased it as a surprise for his wife. How romantic!

It’s an honour to be on the team again and to know that my paintings may provide some cheer to those having health issues. The Redfern benefits from all sales; – a percentage of the purchase price is donated to their funds.

ONE-MAN EXHIBITION IN THE LITTLE STUDIO IN THE LOFT GALLERY
SUNDAY 5 AUGUST – SATURDAY 18 AUGUST 2018

Salcombe Art Club invite members, including associate members, to take one or two weeks in the Little Studio, to display as many of their paintings as they can hang in the space.

More recent paintings that didn’t sell last year can be hung so they usually get another airing.

I’ll be stewarding all day both Sundays – 5 August and 12 August – so that’s a good time to pop in and chat, if you want to ‘meet the artist’.

SHAF ARTS TRAIL
SATURDAY 13 OCTOBER – SUNDAY 28 OCTOBER 2018

The South Hams Art Forum (SHAF) is now a fortnight long, including half-term week.

Viewings at Beacon House Gallery are usually by appointment but, for the period of the SHAF Arts Trail, we will welcome visitors 11am-3pm Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and 10am-5pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. (Closed on a Tuesday)

There will be a private preview evening on Friday 12 October – with wine and nibbles. On the guest list are gallery owners and previous purchasers of my work. If you would also like an invitation to this invitation-only event, please contact me.

Back to classes!

Yes, the Salcombe Art Club Summer exhibition is over, we’ve had the SHAF Arts trail and, for many of us artists, it’s back to classes for the winter months.

To attend, you need to be a member of Salcombe Art Club. Lay membership costs only £12 per annum.

Vacancies on Salcombe Art club classes

Classes are arranged each term and you’ve missed the official signing up for the Autumn term. However, there are spaces on these two courses:

The Enjoyment of Drawing with Jennifer Johnson (Code: JJD)
Mondays: October 31, November 7, 14, 21, 28, December 5. Cost £105
Each week a different subject will be explored through the subtleties of pen, ink, charcoal, pencil, crayon, pastel and watercolour.
Jennifer is a well-known local tutor and with her skill, enthusiasm and guidance there’s always more to learn. All abilities are welcome.

Oil painting with Ian Carr (Code: ICT) Cost £70
Tuesday evenings: October 4 – December 6, 7 – 9 pm (10 weeks)
Ian’s fun-packed courses are popular with people at all levels. Oil paint is a forgiving medium and ideal for anyone who has limited experience of paint; it builds confidence and invites experimentation. Ian is a very experienced Salcombe based artist who loves teaching and sharing his enthusiasm. This course is suitable for the experienced, not so experienced and the absolute beginner. What classes do I attend?

I attend Michael Hill’s watercolour/acrylic class on a Tuesday and the full-day oil class with Ian Carr on a Friday. It’s a great opportunity to meet with fellow artists and enjoy their company while learning more and more techniques.

Where are the classes held?

All classes are in the Loft Gallery, the home of Salcombe Art Club. The Loft Gallery is situated behind the Fortescue Inn, and above a popular shoe shop, on a delightful footpath called Victoria Quay. And, Low Tide at Fishermans Cove – the featured image above – is the view from Victoria Quay.

Watercolour Exhibition: 21 August – 1 September

Right now, the Loft Gallery is home to the Salcombe Art Club Summer Exhibition.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE SUMMER EXHIBITION ENDS?

When this annual exhibition ends, late in September, the unsold paintings are wrapped and removed by the artists, and the display boards are stored in the roof space. The trestle tables and easels are retrieved, and the Loft Gallery reverts to its winter role: a busy working space for the members of Salcombe Art Club.

A packed programme of art classes commences for all categories of member: lay, associate and full. These tutored classes – in drawing and painting (watercolour, acrylic and oil) – continue through the winter months until next Easter when the next Summer Exhibition opens.

Then, by way of a reward and in recognition of their hard work, the masterpieces of the artists who attended the various classes are displayed in the Little Studio.

Michael Hill’S Watercolour/acrylic CLASS EXHIBITION: SUNDAY 21 August UNTIL ThursDAY 1 September

Starting Sunday 21 August – for 12 days– it’s the turn of Michael Hill’s watercolour/acrylic class to show their work.

As well as the five oil paintings already on display in the main exhibition, I’ll have five watercolours on display in this class exhibition: Hope Cove Fishing Gear (also featured above), Reflections at Batson, Racing Past Blackstone and Salcombe Dawn III and a mounted, but unframed, study of Corfe Castle in the browser.

AFFORDABLE ART

For less than 1% of the sales price of an original, the first three images, and many others, are available as a fine art greetings card, at Bonningtons (the newsagents) and Salcombe Information Centre (both a short walk from the Loft Studio).

The complete range of cards is available at Malborough Post Office and, if you are visiting Kingsbridge, our newest stockist is Bloomers, the florists, 37 Fore Street (about half way up the hill!).

Exhibition: Sunday 24 July – Saturday 6 August

Right now, the Loft Gallery is home to the Salcombe Art Club Summer Exhibition.

What happens when the Summer Exhibition ends?

Then, by way of a reward and in recognition of their hard work, the masterpieces of the artists who attended the various classes are displayed in the Little Studio.

Ian Carr’s oil class exhibition: Sunday 24 July until Saturday 24 August

Starting Sunday 24 July – for a fortnight – it’s the turn of Ian Carr’s oil class to show their work. I’ll have four paintings on display, as well as those already on display in the main exhibition.

Sunlight Across the Bar (featured above) is one of the few paintings that I’ve produced using a box canvas, 16 by 16 inches. This style of presentation is considered to be more modern than the traditional ‘framed, and often behind glass’ which predominates the Loft Gallery. The other three paintings are all traditionally framed and will be familiar to my blog readers.

Dappled Light III was on display in my one-man exhibition earlier this year.

Harvest Reaper II was also on display in my one-man exhibition and was featured in a blog entry focusing on the South Sands Ferry.

The Burgh Island Hotel featured in a Sketchbook Note on 11 July.The sales price for these four oil paintings ranges from £350 to £400.
